Fall at Its Finest: Great Leaves – Great Weather - in the Great Smoky Mountains!
With winter right around the corner, the Great Smoky Mountains could not be any nicer! Though the leaves are past peak color, there is still some fantastic color around the Tennessee Smokies however; it is just about all gone in North Carolina. All of the pictures here in this article were taken in the last 24 hours around the Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge area of the Tennessee Great Smoky Mountains. As you can see, the colors are bright and vivid and lots of the leaves are still on the trees even though most elsewhere around the country they are down on the ground already.  Some of the best places to see the fall color are still around the Foothills Parkway, some sections of Newfound Gap Road in the Great Smoky Mountains national park, much of Wears Valley, Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg and Sevierville Tennessee. Some of the darker hollows and very high elevations in the Smokies have lost their color, but in places such as the Dollywood Theme Park and around the Parkway in Pigeon Forge, some of the trees have not even peaked in fall colors yet.  To make a trip to Dollywood even better on its 25th anniversary, right now even though it is in the upper 60s right now in Dollywood, the Smoky Mountains Christmas celebration is going on at Dollywood and there are plenty of discount tickets to go around! Winterfest with its millions of holiday lights all throughout Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg and Sevierville kicked off earlier this week. With all the lights and beautiful decorations around the Smokies it will be hard to not be in the holiday and Christmas mood, and the outlet malls in the Smoky Mountains are offering deals you can't pass up on the perfect Christmas gift. Fall season also means apples and this has been a record-breaking year for the apple crop in the Great Smoky Mountains. Even though many plants bloomed early this year, the leaves on the tress are staying far longer than last year even though the weather has been usually warm and dry for fall, which is just fantastic to hike, bike, fish or motor your way around the Smokies.  So if you never came to the Smokies to enjoy the fall color, now is the time to come to the Great Smoky Mountains as the colors are great, the holiday decorations are awesome, the traffic is light and cabin rental rates are far lower than they were just a few days ago. Great Wildflower photography without a long hike in the woods!
Spring is a wonderful to be in the Great Smoky Mountains and the Great Smoky Mountains national park is one of the best places to see a huge variety of beautiful wild flowers in the Southeastern United States. Photographers wait all year to come here to the Smokies and may hike miles to find the wild flowers that are looking for. Well we will let you in on a little secret, if you rent a cabin in the Great Smoky Mountains, you me be able to take see stunning wildflowers and other fantastic nature photographs right from a cabin in Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge or Sevierville! To prove this point we picked out a location that is so close to both downtown Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge you can see it in the distance. You can also see from this mountain the famous triple peaks of Mt LeConte in the Great Smoky Mountains national park and Bluff Mountain near Wears Valley. Here we found a few outstanding log cabins for rent - all with great views and facing west and semi west for great sunsets from the decks of these vacation rentals that all have hot tubs outside. 3 of these great cabins are all on the same street walking distance from one another and here is where I started to look for wildflowers that were only a short walking distance from these cabins in the Smokies. I first looked with about 100 yards in both directions which was hard to do as the weather in the Smokies today was perfect and I could see all the way out to the Cumberland Plateau from all of these cabins. Right next to the cabins were flowering trees and bushes and I took the picture of the dogwood tree with large white flowers and the red and yellow Columbine flower across the street.   Along the street you will see a rock wall and if you walk uphill along this rock wall you will see the nature has created a beautiful rock garden with Hepatica, wood anemone and great chickweed. There is also a beautiful contrast of colors and patterns on the leaves of wildflowers just waiting to bloom!  
A few paces up on the left are vines with beautiful showy trumpets of yellow with a red throat. Stop here for a while and keep your eyes open as hummingbirds have been on this mountaintop now for almost a week and if you are careful you will see them darting around looking to get a tasty snack. Make sure you look out here at the awesome view too .Walking maybe another 75 more feet uphill is you will have passed by at least 8 clumps of common blue violets which have been blooming for weeks.  A little further up and you will see the fresh green and red leaves just unfurling to catch the light and warmth of the sun poking out between sprays of more Great Chickweed dancing in the afternoon breeze.  Walking higher up on the right are 3 clumps right now of a sure sign of spring in the Smokies - some Fire Pink flowers that are actually bright red.  Ok we only have a little ways more to go to get to the top of the mountain! Enjoy the view on the left and the other wildflowers on the right. Be sure to be careful or you may miss the pretty Daisy Fleabane some of which was poking out by some moss along the side of the road.  Ok not much further to go to get to the peak where you make a rich down the new paved road and you will see one of the best vistas in the Smokies and score of flowering bushes! Easter vacation in the Great Smoky Mountains
This Easter weekend is going to be a very special treat for anyone coming to vacation in Gatlinburg Tennessee, Pigeon Forge or Sevierville in the Great Smoky Mountains. What to expect in the Smoky Mountains during January
One of the best times to come to the Smokies is in January. Most people who come to vacation in the Smoky Mountains have been here at least once before and often they are looking to come here and enjoy one of the seasons when they have not been here before and January is one of the favorites of the locals. January in the Smoky Mountains is unpredictable when it comes to the weather, but you can be guaranteed that you will have a great time, find off season prices everywhere including cabin and chalet rental rates and no crowds! Stay here long enough in January and you can be pretty well assured you will see snow in the highest elevations of the Great Smoky Mountains national park.  The weather in Smoky Mountains during January changes day to day for example last weekend it was almost 70 degrees in Gatlinburg and today we are expecting up to 6 inches of snow! When it does snow during January in the Smokies, it almost never sticks around for more than a few hours in the lower elevations but the upper elevations in the Great Smoky Mountains national park can see snow stay for days or even weeks. Of course outdoor water parks in the Smokies are closed during the winter and you will find some other attractions close down as it is so quiet here in January but don't despair - there is still plenty to do! During January you will find that Winterfest is still going on strong. Winterfest takes place in Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg and Sevierville and starts in November as a holiday celebration with events and millions of holiday lights decorating the Smokies and turning the area into a winter wonderland. During January one of the most popular events of Winterfest takes place called Wilderness Wildlife Week and this year marks the 19th anniversary of Wilderness Wildlife Week. Wilderness Wildlife Week is based out of Pigeon Forge and has guided hikes in the Great Smoky Mountains national park, wildlife classes and lectures, photography classes and exhibits, historical lectures and demonstrations and musical performances and so much more. Spending time during January in the Great Smoky Mountains national park is a fantastic time to get away from it all and enjoy the peace and quiet and the beauty of the Smokies. In January the wildlife in the Smokies can be a little harder to find as snakes, spiders and mosquitoes are not around and active in the cold. The black bears are also in their quiet hibernation mode and almost impossible to see as they are almost never active.  Take a tour of Cades Cove by car or bike and you will see that not only is there almost no traffic, the deer are everywhere and the male deer called bucks are sporting their antlers from the December rut. In the Cataloochee valley section of the national park you will be able to see our North American Elk that have been reintroduced in the park which are an awesome site to behold. Look carefully all around the park and you should be able to see coyote in the hour or so after sunrise or before sunset and if you are really lucky, red or grey fox as well. Make sure if you walk up Clingmans Dome road to check out the walls of ice that form white and transparent curtains that glistens in the sunlight - a perfect backdrop to the evergreen trees above. Winterfest in the Smokies is still going on strong
Even though Christmas and New Years are over and it reached into the upper 60s today in parts of Gatlinburg, Winterfest is still going on strong in the Smoky Mountains! Gatlinburg Trolley Winterfest City Lights Tour
The Smoky Mountains come to life every fall when Winterfest in the Smokies kicks off in Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge and Sevierville Tennessee during which more than 8,000,000 Christmas and holiday lights blaze throughout the night. Millions flock to the Smoky Mountains to enjoy Winterfest and one of the most popular Winterfest attractions is to see all of the holiday light displays in and around the 3 cities that light up the Smoky Mountains. Though Winterfest lights are spread out over a large area, the city of Gatlinburg has the prettiest downtown area when it is all lit up with the Winterfest lights and it also has the greatest concentration of Holiday Lights. Fall Weekend activities in the Great Smoky Mountains October 18th – 19th
Looking for activities to do on a budget this weekend in the Great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee? We have 2 big events going on here in the Smokies and the most expensive one is only $2 a carload! This weekend we have activities going on in Cosby Tennessee and Walland Tennessee both evens are in sight of the Great Smoky Mountains national park and both Smokies events are a few minutes drive from Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg and Sevierville Tennessee. The first event this weekend actually started today at the Cosby visitors center on 321 at the Moonshine Capital of the world Cosby TN - the 11th annual On Cosby outdoor festival. Here at the On Cosby festival for the price of parking which goes to the local fire department, you an enjoy live musical shows, dancing, demonstrations, talent shows, events and free games for the kids, antique tractor and car show, story telling and so much more. On Cosby Festival Schedule. The On Cosby show is a great way to meet and mingle with the locals from the Smoky Mountains and is the best family friendly entertainment value of the year - perfect for everyone whether you are on a budget or not. You will also see local artwork and handicrafts and there are plenty of booths to shop for bargains and taste some locally made food. Be sure to bring back some of the locally delicacy: sourwood honey!  Further down 321 a short drive past the Foothill Parkway you will find the Carver families Apple groves and their retail store which features more apple varieties than you have ever seen before - most locally grown and tasting is encouraged. People drive up as far away as Alabama during apple season to buy apples as well as their famous fried apple pies. Be sure to pick up a gallon on fresh pressed apple cider - it delicious and unpasteurized for a full bodied flavor. On the other end of the Great Smoky Mountains national park 12 miles west of the Townsend entrance and 11 miles east of Maryville the national park service will be holding a open house Autumn Leaf driving tour on the Foothills Parkway. The Foothills Parkway is a stunning section of roadway that is meant to stretch from the east end of the park to the west on the Tennessee side connecting the Towns of Cosby from I 40, Pigeon Forge Gatlinburg, Wears Valley, Townsend, Walland and ending up on 129. There is also a section of the Foothills Parkway known as the Spur which connects Gatlinburg with Pigeon Forge and has a short cut via a bypass into the Great Smoky Mountains national park. The Foothills Parkway has some of the most beautiful scenery in the South Eastern US that can be seen from any roadway and is maintained and patrolled by the national park service. Even though the construction of this road started in the 1970's, only parts of the Foothills Parkway are finished because of construction problems and budgetary issues. 2 sections of this incomplete road just need to have a so called Missing Link connecting both these sections of the Foothills Parkway finished which is expected to be done by some time in 2009. Since the fall colors are starting to peak here in the Great Smoky Mountains the national park service will be opening one of these sections to motorists this weekend so they can enjoy the beauty of this road while being enveloped by the beautiful fall colors of the Smokies. Drivers will be allowed to ride on the Foothills Parkway from 9 am to 3 pm this Saturday and Sunday and the entrance is at the Foothills Parkway interchange off US 321 where you will be directed.
