Free musical entertainment at the Great Smoky Mountains national park
If you are coming into the Smokies this weekend you are in for a real treat that the city of Gatlinburg Tennessee and the Great Smoky Mountains national park are putting on just for you: the "Music of the Mountains" program at the Sugarlands visitor center this Saturday, March 28th, 2009. Inside the Sugarlands Auditorium the fun begins at 10 am where you will get to hear how the music of the mountains entertained the people that once lived in and around what is now the Great Smoky Mountains national park. Southern Appalachian music has its roots mostly from European settlers who first came to the Smoky Mountains from Ireland, Scotland and England. There are also musical influences in the Smokies from Germany and the African instrument the traveling minstrels used to play which became the banjo. The cornucopia of sounds and melodies all became embedded into the music of the Southern Appalachian Smoky Mountains. The musical free shows at the Sugarlands Visitor Center which is just outside the City Limits of Gatlinburg on Newfound Gap Road (US 441) and Little River Road will go until about 5 pm. The schedule for the free musical performances at the Sugarlands visitor center of the Great Smoky Mountains national park is as follows: - 10 am Lost Mill String Band
- 11 am Tony Thomas
- 12 pm Dr. Ted Olson
- 1 pm Boogertown Gap
- 2 pm Roan Mountain Hilltoppers
- 4 pm Roger Howell and the Bailey Mountain Ramblers
At 6:30 pm you can see the renowned local musicians from the Greenbrier area "Jimbo Whaley and Friends" perform in the W L Mills Conference Center section of the Gatlinburg Convention center. Tickets for the night's performances are $25 at the door. Since all of the Music of the Mountains performances will be held indoors there is no rain date scheduled. This is a great way to experience the Smokies and the Appalachian music with its ballads, jigs, reels, and fiddle songs so many of us love and we hope to see you there. What can be better than listing to great music and then going back and relaxing in your own cabin that you rented for a great price?
